Alongside cricket, Hope Centre also conducts inclusive carrom competitions once a year in which both Persons with and without Disabilities participates. Teams are identified based on their abilities to play the game.
As part of an initiative to offer a platform to underserved children, Hope Centre facilitated the participation of Carrom teams from the UT of Jammu and Kashmir in the HCL Foundations' "Sports for Change" competition.
District Administration duly supported the selection process of teams. Teams came from the government schools after proper and fair selection.
The inter-district competitions were covered by both print and electronic media. The event is held with the same strategy that a sport is the best tool for the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.
After qualifying at the state and regional level, the teams travelled to Nagpur, Maharashtra-sponsored by the HCL Foundation- where they played the finals.
Inclusive Football Competition
To provide a platform to children from government schools, particularly from economically disadvantaged families, HCL Foundation-one of our donors- the HCL Foundations’ “Sports for Change” initiative wherein children especially our beneficiaries were selected from our intervention areas for a variety of sports competitions. The participants were shortlisted after going through district and regional level competitions. The selected players/athletes were allowed to play at the national level. Football was an important component of this initiative. The team from the UT of Jammu & Kashmir won the finals of Football at the national level played in Nagpur, Maharashtra. It was an inclusive event as the unit comprised both Persons with and without Disabilities.
Athletics:
Athletics formed an important component of the “Sports for Change” event. Again, the best athletes from seven districts of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir were shortlisted for the event after proper selection. The athletes had to go through district and regional level competitions to qualify for nationals.
Best trainers and facilities were made available to the teams to prepare for the event.
After qualifying at the regional level, the athletes travelled to Nagpur, Maharashtra to participate in the finals at National level. The effort bore fruit as the athletes from Jammu & Kashmir bagged third position in the 600mts run and second in the long jump.
Volleyball
Lack of infrastructure, facilities and coaches drive the volleyball enthusiasts away from the game. The UT of Jammu & Kashmir has not yet produced any player of note to represent the UT internationally. Even at National level Jammu & Kashmir unit has regrettably not brought any laurels to the state.
As part of the HCL Foundations “Sports for Change” initiative, school students including the students with disabilities were allowed to showcase their sports talent at National level.
The teams were selected after trials at the school level. The selected players went through district and regional level competition. After the district level competition, coaches and facilities helped teams to prepare the Ntionals. Coaches also focused on improving life skills of players like self discipline, respect for others such as friends, family, punctuality, teamwork and healthy living.
Those selected after the regional competition got to play Nationals in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The Team brought the laurels to the state by winning the final. It was a big moment for the players as it was for the first time that a team from Jammu & Kashmir won such a title.
