Early intervention is considered one of the ideal ways of preventing disabilities at an early age. Early intervention services are given to infants and toddlers who are at risk of developmental delays. These services are worked out in such a way that a technical person can identify and meet children’s needs in like physical, cognitive, communication, social or emotional development, sensory, and adaptive development. A child is considered to have developmental delays if there is a delay in development in one or more of the following areas.
1) Physical development including fine or gross motor function
2) Cognitive development
3) Communication development
4) Social emotional development
5) Adaptive development
Other established conditions in children are3 also eligible for early intervention
Congenital/ Anomalies/Genetic Disorders/Inborn errors of Metabolism.
Congenital infections
Autism
Attachment disorder
Hearing loss
Visual impairment
Neurological disease
Neonatal conditions and associated complications
Early intervention services are available scantily in our part of the country. The gaps in the availability of early intervention services are so big that children especially in remote areas do not get access to such services. The scarcity of trained professionals, the concentration of such units in urban areas, unavailability of transportation, ignorance, financial and other constraints put up hurdles in the way of making such services accessible for people in far-flung areas, especially to the destitute.
Our early intervention centre has been operational for the past two decades offering services to people in remote and border areas of the UT of Jammu & Kashmir. Our track record is more than satisfactory in terms of service delivery to people from remote and border areas of the UT. We have a qualified and trained staff that after identification devises a treatment plan and executes it till the time it is required
