Name: Mohammad Rafiq Kalas

Diagnosis: Post-injury amputation of lower limb

Background

Mohammad Rafiq resides in Akhal Kangan. Like any youngster, he had many aspirations and goals to achieve, but destiny had other plans for him.

Apart from seriously pursuing his studies, Rafiq also worked in his spare time to support his family financially and pay for his education.

Challenges: In 2019, while driving a tractor, he seriously injured both of his lower limbs in an accident. As a result, in 2020, his left leg was amputated, causing all of his dreams to be shattered.  He became dependent on others for most of his needs after losing his mobility which was a difficult psychological adjustment.

Hope Intervention: After hearing about Hope Centre from one of its beneficiaries, Rafiq arrived at the facility and was promptly registered by the field team. His condition was assessed and a complete rehabilitation plan was devised for him. The assessment team referred him to the Prosthetic and Orthotic unit of the Centre where his measurement was taken for prosthesis.

Rafiq underwent comprehensive rehabilitation, which included physical therapy and psychological counselling. Physical therapy focused on strengthening the muscles of the remaining limb and orienting him to use the prosthesis and gait pattern.

Results: After undergoing a month-long rehabilitation program, Rafiq received a prosthesis for his left lower limb. Following the fitment, he was able to resume some of the activities he did before his amputation, including continuing his studies. Moreover, he is now able to participate in sports such as cricket, carom, and chess. He has even participated in a district-level cricket tournament.

The services offered by HDC were instrumental in helping Rafiq to refocus on his life goals and aspirations. The successful fitment of the prosthesis was a significant milestone that greatly improved his mobility and allowed him to regain his independence and functionality. This holistic approach included not only the physical aspects of the prosthesis fitment but also emotional and psychological support to enhance his overall well-being.
