NORTH KASHMIR INCLUSIVE SPORTS EVENT

Background:

Considered a vital tool to enable persons with disabilities to realise their full potential and advocate for their rights, inclusive sports have been a regular feature in Hope Disability Centre’s activity calendar since 2009. The persistent push and encouragement given to people with disabilities with regard to sports has seen some of our beneficiaries play at national and international levels.

It is a given that sport is the most effective tool for promoting understanding and acceptance of persons with disabilities in society. It also imbues them with a sense of worth. It allows them to demonstrate to society and the world that they are not less capable given a chance.

About the event:

In keeping with its commitment to its beneficiaries and in keeping with the HCL Foundation’s thrust on promoting inclusive sports, Hope Disability Centre conducted an inclusive sports event in Bandipora, a north Kashmir district.

On July 12, 2023, Hope Disability Centre, with the support of the HCL Foundation, organized a “North Kashmir Inclusive Sports Event” for people with disabilities at Sheri Kashmir Stadium in Bandipora.

The event showcased a range of inclusive sports activities such as Cricket, Carrom, Wheelchair races, and Chess. The participants (mostly our beneficiaries) were selected from five districts: Ganderbal, Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, and Srinagar. Participants included both people with and without disabilities.

Key officials from the district administration and police attended the event. The district development commissioner of Bandipora, Mr. Owais Ahmad (IAS), was the chief guest. The objective of inviting officials was to lend credibility to the event and help us spread the message of inclusivity to a wider audience.

The cricket match had some absorbing moments as teams fought it out till the very last over, providing wholesome entertainment for spectators. Likewise, wheelchair races were fun as well.

The event was a success, as the participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves competing in sports with their ilk. The athletes' sporting skills and sportsmanship had spectators totally enthralled.

Trophies, medals, and refreshments were distributed among the players. Refreshments were also served to schoolchildren who came to watch the event. It was also an opportunity for the public to learn more about inclusive sports.
